SONJA HENIE (1912-1969)
Figure skater and movie actress who won 3 Olympic gold medals in figure skating at
St.Moritz in 1928, in Lake Placid 1932 and Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 1936. She contributed with her
personal style strongly to make competitive figure skating popular and also accepted as a
sport. In 1936 Henie turned professional in USA. Here she was a star in ice shows and took
also part in many American films as a skating star. The Henie-Onstad Center of Art near
Oslo is built by means of her and her husband's foundation. About 100.000 people annually visit this famous
center with its art collection, also donated by her and her husband. The stamp is part of a minisheet. |
