Norwegian Women on Stamps |
GRETE WAITZ (1953-)
Norway's famed marathon queen. She has won the New York Marathon nine times, the world
championship in cross-country race five times and is the world champion in marathon from
1983. She is the symbol of sport
movement and female revolution in sport in Norway in the 1980's. Once a year in Oslo the
streets are filled with about 50.000 female joggers. This is the so-called Grete Waitz
Race, which has become more and more popular each year among common Norwegian women in all
ages. Grete Waitz has had a remarkable influence on other sports women and not just them
but also she has contributed generally to give the common Norwegian women a healthy and
strong self-image. She is honoured with a statue located outside Bislett Stadium in Oslo. |
