CROWN PRINCESS MÄRTHA (1901-1954)
Märtha Sofia Lovisa Dagmar
Thyra was born in Stockholm as Princess of Sweden. In 1929 she married her cousin, the Norwegian Crown Prince Olav
(later King Olav V). They got 3 children: Ragnhild, Astrid and Harald (the present King
Harald V). After attended courses in first aid and nursing she was appointed as a Red
Cross Nurse Honoris Causa. During the German occupation of Norway in World War II she had
to stay in USA together with her children. These years she
traveled around being a good spokesman for
Norwegian interests. In 1945 she returned to Norway together with her children and father-in-law,
King Haakon VII. On the two lower stamps we can see the arrival to Oslo. She died in 1954,
too early to become Queen of Norway. |
