Famous Norwegian Women on Stamps
WENCHE FOSS (1917-)
Another Norwegian actress, although not so well known abroad. On the left side of the first stamp we can see a picture from 1951 where she is Click to enlargeplaying the leading role in the film "Krane's Conditori". This film is based on a novel written by the female, Norwegian author Cora Sandel. Wenche Foss made her debut in 1935 and is still active in films as well as at the theatre. With her talent and knowledge of human nature she has been able to give life to many kind of role figures both in tragedies and comedies. Leading roles in "Lysistrata", "Hedda Gabler" and "Mary Stewart" are examples of the width of her repertory. Click to enlargeThe second stamp commemorates the centenary of the Norwegian National Theatre. Here, at an age of 79, we can see her as Lady Markby in a scene from Oscar Wilde's "An Ideal Husband". Besides her fame in the theatrical profession, Wenche Foss has also won great popularity and respect for her engagement with disabled children and breast cancer - on her very personal way.
