CAMILLA COLLETT (1813-1895)
Portrait of the author Camilla Collett taken from a photo from 1860. She wrote the first
modern novel in Norwegian literature "The District Governor's Daughters" published in 1854. The time
had need for literature that could promote a debate on social problems. This book was
issued anonymously. It addressed the problems of the time, problems like emotional and
intellectual liberation of women and sexual equality. The first women's rights
organization in Norway formed in 1884 was strongly influenced by her books. She was the
sister of the famous poet Henrik Wergeland. Their family belonged to the upper class of
the society. |
