MINNA CANTH (1844-1897)
Portrait of the author Minna Canth commemorating the centenary of her birth. She was a
playwright, novelist and essayist and is known as a pioneer of the Finnish
realism. She stood up fighting for womens rights and matters concerning the labour
movement and workers welfare. In her later works she was most respected for her
psychological portraits. She took education as teacher, got married and gave birth to 7
children. After the death of her husband she turned to writing to support her family. She
also took charge of her fathers shop saving it from bankruptcy. Her statue is found in
Kuopio, Tampere and Jyväskylä. |
